On May 23, 2025, Scotia School celebrated Career Day. This entertaining and informative day included community members from various job paths presenting to the TK-8th grade students.
The 6th-8th grade middle school students received in-depth messaging, hearing from six presenters representing diverse career opportunities in our county, while our TK-5th grade students attended two Career Day assemblies.
Presenters this year for 6th-8th grade included:
Travis Victorine, Humboldt Creamery, who shared his path to becoming Production Manager and the many job opportunities at the Creamery. The students were also treated to chocolate milk!
Morgan Dodson, parent of Scotia School students, Navy Veteran, who inspired students with her stories and pictures about her time in the Navy, which was invaluable as many of our students are considering entering the armed forces.
Ronald Vevoda, Vevoda Dairy, informed students about his education and career path in agriculture. He also inspired the students with the history of his dairy farm and the daily operations.
Lydia Haake, PG&E Senior Outreach Specialist, who illustrated job choices at our local PG&E, but also connected students to employment all across our state.
Dylan Burley, Fortuna Police Department, presented his role as Eel River Schools Resource Officer and shared many of the tools he utilizes.
Kylie Mosbacher, Sequoia Zoo Volunteer Coordinator, who connected a love for animals and job opportunities at our local zoo.
Presenters for TK-5th grade:
Chad Crotty, Deputy with the Humboldt County Sheriff Department, shared his journey to joining the Sheriff’s Department and spoke to the students about his daily routine and how important it is to be a good person and make good choices.
Quotes from our students:
“He was really cool and young.”
“You have to work hard and train to be in the Sheriff’s Department.”
Joanna Garcinuno, parent of Scotia School graduates, from “Love Mini Donuts,” offered advice on starting and running a family business.
Quotes from our students:
“You have to work really hard.”
“They have three other jobs!”
This event was a collaborative effort between Community Schools, our after school program (ASES) and our Associated Student Body (ASB).
Career Day activities continued after school as ASES Coordinator Lisa Broadstock planned an engaging, hands-on event at our school gym including:
Chris Broadstock, Scotia School Alumni, TriCounties Bank, Banking/Savings Accounts
Tanner Broadstock, Scotia School Alumni, Nursing/Hospital
Johnny Mahan and Hunter Hatten, Scotia School Alumni, Rio Dell Fire District, demonstration with a fire truck.
PG&E demonstration with a bucket truck and climbing a power pole.
It was important for our students to meet community members representing different job opportunities in our area. Whether they are considering college, trade school, or entering the workforce after high school, an understanding of possible career paths expands a vision for their future.
